In 2020, #BlackLivesMatter protests erupted around the U.S. after George Floyd, an African-American man, was murdered by police in Minneapolis. One particular video of a little girl participating in the march in New York, passionately chanting “No Justice, No Peace”, went viral, viewed over 24 million times at the time of this painting. The 7-year-old girl, with fists in the air, expressing such fierce betrayal at the injustice of Floyd’s death, evoked a strong reaction online, e.g.:
“No one that tiny should have to fight that hard.”
“The look in her eyes and in her voice brings me to tears.”
“Here comes the future…”
Myself, I thought, we all need to fight for this small warrior’s America, an America with the upheld promise of justice for all.
This painting was created specifically for a “recapture the flag” show at Passable, and I wanted to emphasize the flag belongs to all us.
