With the Attacks from Mars pinball machine, our riders are the ball in the game, and as they bounce around the play space, they are activating sound and lighting.  This project is a gadgeteers dream, with interactive, controllable LEDs, arduinos, switches, etcs. — all those wonderful mechanical aspects of pinball machines in an age that is dominated so much by digital technologies.

The game and mural theme is a cross between the Attack from Mars pinball machine and Cloud City, with references to over fifty years of futuristic robots — both good robots, and evil robots — either attacking or saving the citizens of our Cloud City.

There were many collaborators on this project, that said Jeffrey Larson in particular designed the playfield and painted a lot of the mural.

Attacks from Mars Giant Pinball Machine

We created a giant, 30 foot pinball machine for Burning Man 2015-2017 as a “mutant vehicle”.  It was designed to convey the experience that the person standing on the playfield was the pinball.  This was a three year project — the first year we created the murals and play space, and the second year we focused on night lighting. In the final year we updated the playfield animation. My role for this project was creative director, original concept design, programming the playfield animation, and the designing and painting over 80 linear feet of murals, which were later displayed and auctioned off at an art show at the Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar.
