Experimenting with glass casting
May 13, 2013
Greg and I were experimenting with glass casting this weekend. As the word “experiment” implies….largely failing. But learning a lot in the process!!! I’m actually really excited we’ve come this far…
Here’s the kiln studio — up and operational in my garage! We’ve been calling it the art garage.
This is the form in silicon. I made this a couple years ago — had converted to resin, but always wanted to try it in glass. We made a plaster mold using this…
Here it is…cooked in the kiln! Some problem…plaster is cracked. Needs to be thicker, and reunified with chi ken wire mesh, turns out.
Here’s Greg busting it out of the mold. I think there’s something wrong with our release agent…we used kiln wash. Should pop off a little easier than this.
Tada! The form in glass. Cracked, w sticky plaster…but still looks cool! I’m excited for the next round of experimenting!!
Problem is just that it takes a long time…here’s the schedule. We also need to get a controller so it doesn’t take so much monitoring of the kiln…we spent aaaaall day and night on it this Sunday.
