This life-sized sculpture was created for Critical Northwest, and then later taken to Burning Man. “Celebrating Balance” was designed to be burned, so was made out of bamboo, newspaper and masking tape. The concept was to celebrate balance, reflecting on the push and pull of production and destruction in the creative lifecycle. Her arms were spread and her wingspan enhanced with chiffon ribbons, to convey the notion of a humanoid phoenix rising, and at Critical Northwest she was positioned over a fire pyre with fire effects projected onto the form to anticipate her impending destruction. At Burning Man she was taken out the night of the burning of the Man, and then burned in the Temple the next evening. A key tenet of the Burning Man creative community is one must get rid of the old to make room for the new.
